The growing trend seems to be employee background checks, and it seems in today’s market, a new employee must almost always be prepared to take a background check

All employers are, however, required to provide the employee with a copy of the background check report, regardless if they are employed or not.

What is usually required for a background check?

• A Social Security Number
• A Record of the Driving License
• A Complete Credit Report
• A Work History Report
• A List of Contacts who know the Employee
• A Criminal Background Check

On the other hand, criminal public records are not that accessible, and there are many different laws from state to state. For example if an employer wants to check on the criminal history of a prospective employee, there are specific laws that must be followed by the employer in order to obtain that information.

These days you need to be prepared to pass a background check if you are serious about getting a job.

So what is the reason some employers are so interested in having their prospective employee go through an employee background check?

If the employee is a student, some of the information may be confidential and may not be released to the employer. An example of that are School Records, which by law are released only upon the consent of the student.

Bankruptcy records are easy to obtain, although your future employer is not allowed to discriminate against an employee due to a previous bankruptcy.

Some reports indicate that 40% of almost all resumes have information that is either untrue or incorrect, and so that is why the employer prefers to do his own independent research through a background check company that is known to do this type of investigation on a regular basis.

The reasons for employee background checks are many, although we only will discuss a couple of them here. First of all some jobs require security clearance, at other times employee applications can be scrutinized via a background check, or a school mentioned in a resume may need to be verified, perhaps an employer wants to make sure the employee actually worked on the day he put down on his timesheet, and so on.

In some states past arrests and convictions cannot be obtained easily, and although bankruptcy is public record, checking for criminal records is not that easy to do, and there is even some information that can never be disclosed and revealed.
