Tougher Regulations For School Bus Drivers Pre-Employment Check.
Bookmark and Share

Are your children safe while traveling to school in a school bus? Last year much attention from the public was received by the news telling about a 53 years old New York school bus driver, who got disoriented and was driving during total 5 hours around the city with the buss full of minor children until the police stopped him after receiving calls from worried parents. Even if no physical harm was caused by the said driver to his small passengers, the encounter cost much stress both for kids and parents. Probably that bus school driver had some mental problems the school authorities had been not aware of before hiring him.

From time to time there happen the stories that are much worse comparing with what have just been told, and with no happy end like this. So, there's always a reason to see what else can be done to ensure our children are driven to school by a reliable person of trust, who should at the same time be a skilled driver.

In this connection a new, tougher regulations providing for stricter and more reliable school drivers background check procedure in the state of Texas, that came into effect since early in 2007, seems like deserving attention and a bit of scrutiny. The new amendment had got much advocacy from behalf of parents still at the stage of congressmen working at formulating clause, but even more support came after the bill was passed and tried by the community.

Following the enactment, all employees of the Texas schools, including school bus drivers, were required to pass a mandatory fingerprinting based national criminal background check. The said provision encompasses both applicants for jobs and the existing school bus drivers, and implies them paying $52 unrefundable fee before submitting to the fingerprinting. New applicants are hired only if the check is passed successfully, and clear criminal history found in public records. As for the existing employees, they are allowed do continue driving for the Texas schools only if the fingerprinting national criminal record verification has confirmed there's no past criminal history of the offences targeting children discovered. Otherwise such drivers have no chance retaining the employment in whatever position within the school system of Texas.

The need to undergo fingerprinting base background check found enough understanding among the school stuff, even if shortly afterwards over 60 employees, including teachers, were forced to resign due to failure to comply with new requirements. From the other hand, quite a number of applicants change their mind to apply once informed about the requirement sign agreement stating they are willing to undergo finger printing based FBI background check. Which means the system works, even if it works slower than it was expected, putting applicants on holding queue. But it is better slow and safe instead of possibly rushing your kid to danger. Children's safety is a priority - period.
